This piece is inspired by traditional stitched samplers that were a common part of girls’ education in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is reminiscent of the “band sampler” style where verses are separated by decorative bands. The bands here show abstract, floral, and oak tree designs. The verses honor the connections that are possible among one another and the frustration I feel at the loss we suffer when people who are different are not valued.
